Good practices : How to minimize the tag loss rate

The application of the tag is a key step to ensure the sustainability of the identification.
The size of the animal, his age or his temper plays for sure a role about how easy the following recommendations may be followed.
However, considering the impact on the loss rate, it is worth to wait being in the best conditions when tagging an animal.

Storage

Although that Reyflex tags are designed to resist to harsh conditions, it is recommended to store them in their original box, away from light and humidity.
A clean tag is the first step against infection.

Aplicator

The applicator is also a very important factor for a robust tagging.
Whatever the model, it must be kept in good condition, especially the pin holding the male side of the tag. When bent, it may lead to defective tagging. When rusted, it may increase the risk of infection. Keeping the applicator clean and in good working condition will avoid many problems.
The Reyflex tags are compliant with most of the applicators on the market. However, an applicator fitted with a European Standard pin proves to be more efficient.
The Reyflex applicator, made of die cast aluminium is a reference in term of efficiency and ergonomy.

Tagging

Before the application, make sure that the female tag is positioned on the internal face of the ear, the male tag on the external face.
The tag must be perpendicular to the applicator.
The right location is the middle of the ear.
Once in position, close quickly the applicator up to the mechanical stop.
Important : the first tag is always easier to apply than the second.
The nervosity of the animal makes the difference and we do recommend to start with the ear
– if any - where the application is the less easy for the user.

Straight after the application, a slight 90° rotation makes easier healing.
